Your incompetent federal overlords: IRS modernization project is 30 years behind and $15 Billion over budget

Sam Corcos, an adviser to the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), appeared on Fox News to discuss the IRS’s so-called modernization effort. This effort, to update the IRS’s ancient technology (it runs on 1960s mainframes programmed with COBOL and assembly language) is 30 years behind schedule and $15 billion over budget. Corcos points out that banks completed similar upgrades in just a few years for a few hundred million dollars.

The IRS has a $3.5 billion operations budget and 80% of that budget goes to contractors, even though the IRS employs 8,000 IT staff. Where did the extra $15 billion go? Contractors rake in cash for work that never gets done. I’d like someone to look into the contractors’ political ties. Does any of that cash get funneled back to politicians or bureaucrats who approve the contracts?

This mess is exactly why DOGE is important. If this is happening in the IRS you know it’s happening in every single alphabet agency in the federal government.
