It would be funny today if this wasn’t reality. My God, what are we doing.
Phil Hartman plays a doctor who has delivered babies in a small town for decades. Nora Dunn plays a reporter for People magazine. Bill Murray is an expectant father, and Victoria Jackson plays his wife. The couple comes in to see the doctor for a checkup, and the doctor announces they are having another girl. Bill Murray asks if the baby will need the surgery that some of his other daughters received, and Phil Hartman says yes. The reporter asks what the surgery is, and Phil Hartman explains that some baby girls are born with testicles and a penis that have to be removed. This is the moment that reveals the doctor’s psychosis. His secretary then walks into the room, played by Jon Lovitz. Lovitz plays the character as visibly masculine, and the doctor mentions that she was one of the first babies he delivered.
The sketch is “Girl-Crazy Obstetrician,” SNL, 1986
